The 7 Souvenirs of August (2014 Summer Souvenir Challenge)

In August 2014, Geocaching.com ran a month-long summer souvenir challenge encouraging players to find different geocache types. Cachers earned six unique souvenirs by posting online “Found It” or “Attended” logs to specific cache types and automatically unlocked a seventh bonus "Achiever" souvenir upon completing the first six.

The seven virtual badges were:
  • The Explorer: Found by logging a Traditional Cache
  • The Sightseer: Found by logging a Multi-Cache.
  • The Puzzler: Found by logging a Mystery (Puzzle) Cache.
  • The Nature Lover: Found by logging an EarthCache or attending a CITO (Cache In Trash Out) event.
  • The Socializer: Found by attending an Event, Mega-Event, or Giga-Event.
  • The Collector: Found by logging rarer cache types like Virtual, Wherigo, Letterbox Hybrid, or Webcam caches.
  • The Achiever: Unlocked automatically in your Trophy Case once all other six were collected.

When the mission was released, on July 8, 2014, there was a “very scientific” quiz geocachers could take to have their geocaching type determined. The link is no longer usable, but it aligned with the quiz presented on the Official Geocaching Blog on October 31, 2013 (see this post).

The Souvenirs - 

The Explorer

Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by finding a Traditional geocache during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. The Explorer is a geocacher who is always seeking out new places and experiences. Whether it’s an urban park, a clever container or something else, the Explorer will be there to find it.

The Sightseer

Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by finding a Multi-Cache during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. There are few better ways to tour an area than by following the stages of a Multi-Cache. It may take longer, but the things you see and the final find make it all worth it.

The Collector

A Souvenir by: Geocaching HQ
Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by finding a Virtual Cache, Wherigo, Letterbox Hybrid or Webcam Cache during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. The Collector souvenir is for all of the geocachers who seek out the rarest of geocache types. Like a seldom-seen exotic bird, these geocaches can only be found by the truly dedicated.

The Socializer

Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by attending an Event Cache, Mega-Event, Giga-Event or The Geocaching Block Party during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. Socializers are always ready with snacks and high-fives. Any geocaching outing is a chance to make new friends and share an experience.

The Puzzler

Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by finding a Mystery Cache during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. Mystery Caches come in all shapes and sizes—some require solving a complex equation before leaving the house, others force you to think on-the-fly while out in the field. This souvenir is for everyone with the mental fortitude to conquer these geocaches.

The Nature Lover

A Souvenir by: Geocaching HQ
Additional Information:
This souvenir was earned by finding an EarthCache or attending a CITO event during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. The Nature Lover souvenir was designed to pay tribute to the geocachers who prefer dirt paths to sidewalks, muddy boots to fancy footwear and trail meals to fine dining.

The Achiever

This souvenir was earned by earning all of the other six souvenirs during the 7 Souvenirs of August, 2014. Congratulations! We always knew you were an achiever, but now you have official status. The Statistics -

At the end of August, when the challenge ended, Geocaching HQ compiled the following results.
  • 555,000 geocachers earned the Explorer souvenir. That means 100,000 more geocachers logged a Traditional geocache in August 2014 than in August 2013.
  • 160,000 geocachers found a Multi-Cache to earn the Sightseer souvenir.
  • Nearly 150,000 geocachers earned the Puzzler souvenir by logging a Mystery Cache.
  • Over 85,000 geocachers earned the Socializer souvenir. The number of geocachers who attended an Event Cache more than doubled from August 2013.
  • Over 100,000 geocachers unlocked the Nature Lover souvenir. This doubled the number of geocachers who found an Earth Cache and quadrupled the number who attended a CITO event.
  • More than 100,000 geocachers found a Letterbox Hybrid, Virtual, Webcam or Whereigo to earn the Collector souvenir.
That’s not all. A whopping 69,550 geocachers around the world earned all six souvenirs to become Geocaching Achievers. Not too shabby.
