Mission GC was a highly popular, spy-themed summer
souvenir campaign hosted by Geocaching HQ during July and August of 2016. Its announcement
was made on July 12, 2016 on the Official Geocaching Blog.
The Core Concept
The overarching storyline cast geocachers as “top-secret” operatives
working for the fictional entity GCHQ 47. Tasked with decoding encoded
messages sent by email and finding specific geocaches to unlock unique digital
profile souvenirs, the multi-week event focused heavily on codebreaking and
community collaboration. Premium members received the email, including encoded
message, one week prior to each souvenir release.
The Mission Structure
The campaign was broken down into three multi-day
qualification windows, each corresponding to an individual souvenir:
- Souvenir
#1 (The International Cache of Mystery): Unlocked by logging a
find or attending an event between July 30 and July 31, 2016.
- Souvenir
#2 (One Cache Is Not Enough): Unlocked by completing a specific
caching milestone between August 13 and August 14, 2016.
- Souvenir #3 & Meta-Souvenir (Mission GC Accomplished): Unlocked by finding a cache between August 27 and August 28, 2016. Successfully earning all three rewards granted the ultimate "Mission GC Accomplished" badge.
The Puzzles and Community Hype
To commemorate the campaign, the official shop also released
highly collectible, trackable physical Mission GC Geo-Achievement Geocoin
in addition to a lapel pin like the one pictured in the final “Mission
Accomplished” souvenir.
